| As of June 2003, long-time local favourite
the Borough Cafe, Park St, SE1 is under threat (as is the whole
area) and will move to a nearby portakabin. The splendid frontage
hid an unremarkable interior but an exceedingly warm atmosphere:
a tiny humid kitchen-space piled with charcoal-flecked bubble
& squeak, crusty pans of beans glugging like tar pit lava,
fuming tea machines... and a sleepy cat with big-hair fur who
would often be curled up unnoticed in a cardboard box on the
window sill, oblivious to the customers who doted on it. A favourite
haunt of composer Michael Nyman too. RIP. |
